About Tulsa
Tulsa is located in northeastern Oklahoma in the heart of “Green Country,” a name given to this part of the state for its green rolling hills, lakes and wooded terrain. Tulsa is a lovely city where 1920’s Art Deco buildings stand next to modern, high-tech offices, where public art works are located along the banks of the Arkansas River, and where parks and gardens throughout the city keep Tulsa green.
Founded in 1898, the city of Tulsa is older than the state itself. The name Tulsa was derived from “tallasi,” a contraction of the Creek Indian word “tallahassee” meaning “old town.” When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the state adopted the Latin motto: “Labor Omnis Vicit,” meaning “Hard Work Conquers All,” a reference that applied to the character of the Oklahoma farming pioneers.
Tulsa’s history encompasses the U.S. Government’s forced relocation of Native American Tribes to Indian Territory, the agricultural development of the area by pioneer settlers, the growth and development of the city as a result of the oil boom and the devastation of Greenwood’s “Black Wall Street” caused by the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. It is the complete history of our city that gives Tulsans a better understanding of the events that influenced our heritage.
Once called “The Oil Capital of the World,” today Tulsa has an impressive business base including telecommunications, transportation, manufacturing, construction, technology, aeronautics, healthcare, oil and natural gas. In 2009, Forbes Magazine listed Tulsa in the top 5 of America’s Most Livable Cities, determined by 5-year income growth, cost of living, crime rate, unemployment and a cultural index. And according to AARP in 2011, Tulsa is one of the most affordable places to retire.
Visitors to Tulsa will quickly discover the city’s entertainment scene offers something for everyone. Professional, semi-professional and collegiate teams give sports fans year-round opportunities to stand up and cheer. With Tulsa football in the fall, hockey in the winter, basketball in the spring, and baseball in the summer, we love our Tulsa sports teams!
Tulsa’s higher education opportunities range from community college and vocational studies to undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs at public and private universities.
We also cherish our fine arts and cultural organizations. Tulsa is home to opera, theater, ballet and symphonic organizations, museums, cultural and historical centers, art galleries, festivals and a flourishing community of extraordinarily talented local artists. Tulsa’s newest event venue, the BOK Center, is our most popular place to see the country’s hottest touring concerts and shows.
Several entertainment districts throughout the city of Tulsa offer a variety of dining options, unique boutiques, and hip clubs for dancing the night away. For outdoor enthusiasts, Tulsa maintains dozens of city and county parks with miles and miles of trails, picnic areas, and recreational programs.
Tulsa County has the most Wi-Fi spots in the state, making us “tech central” in Oklahoma. So if you’re looking for a Wi-Fi link, you’ll find one at many of Tulsa’s restaurants and cafes. Jump online and check out what’s happening in Tulsa today, this week or next month on our Events & Shows page.
Tulsa is blessed with a community that preserves its legacy of diversity and celebrates its distinguished arts and humanities organizations. We treasure our educational opportunities, and we support our businesses. Oklahoma, like so many other states in the Heartland, grew out of the country’s movement west. In Tulsa, our founders paved the way for us to come together and blend our cultural backgrounds to create a thriving community.
Quite simply, Tulsa is a great place to live and to visit!
